County begins disaster plan update process - the Western news

Lincoln County is planning for its next disaster event and the public would like to hear it.

The county disaster and Emergency Services Department is holding two public meetings as it begins the process of updating its prepared mitigation plan.

"We really would like to people involved," said Vic white, Director of the Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency.

White said that of the public, in particular in some areas of concern life entrance want to receive the County.

The plan outlines potential hazards and mitigation identified for these problem areas. Risks that have the potential, the region in the plan listed effects include earthquakes, floods, wildfire, severe winter storms, high winds and landslides, among other things. Potential human caused threats include urban fires, explosions, uncontrolled chemical or hazardous material release (either at a fixed location or in transit), power failure and dam fail, among other things.

It is also a resource for county residents, organizations and local government in the planning for natural disasters and man-made disasters.

Mitigation is detailed for each potential hazard. The plan proposes through the evaluation of bridges and channels such as reducing the effects of floods and update as necessary.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency requires Disadter plans every five years to be updated. The public hearings are part of a 12-month process. After public comment comes and creates a draft plan, it is submitted to FEMA for final approval.

After completion of the County and the municipalities to accept the plan, they are eligible for FEMA grants for projects to risk mitigation.

Lincoln County commissioned with Tetra Tech, Inc., to support the plan update.

The public hearings are Monday, April 25. The first is at 10 am in the Libby Town Hall. The second is County Eureka at 3 P.m. in the annex.
